Cost

...

For information about cost of one flight in the glider see Joy Flight page.

The cost to fly is certainly well below what people expect, the highest cost is the initial training to become solo, as this often requires a number of flights over a short period of time to become proficient. It should be noted that all training is done by qualified instructors free of charge. On average it will take about 40 flights, before a pilot becomes proficient. Some however will never go solo and some members have gone solo in 20 or less flights. So as a guide to solo, assuming we take into consideration membership fees, 40 launches to 1500 ft and the bulk flying scheme would amount to $1,850.

Once a pilot is solo each flight now costs the cost of a tow plus the cost of the glider hire. Say a four hour flight would cost $132. If however the pilot joined the bulk scheme, where he paid for the glider hire at the beginning of the year $650.Once the pilot has flown 20 hours the flying becomes cheaper, as it is effectively free, only the launch cost of $37 to 2000 ft for a days flying, and may even be up to 9 hours.

Put another way a pilot on the Bulk scheme with 100 hours per year, and say 4 hours per flight would be paying $6.50 an hour.
